The House

A Metal Sculpture by Gilbert McCann: Metal Artist

'The House' sculpture, by Gilbert McCann

About This Sculpture

A shelter/house can protect you from the climate, wild animals, and unwanted observation. It can give you a feeling of well-being.

Your brain is like a house - It is the sum total of its rooms. Some rooms contain areas of problem solving. Some rooms help us instinctively. Think of two construction workers - one is logical, the other is emotional. These are the builders of the rooms. Sometimes they work independently. Other times they work as a team.

Collecting life experiences is the building material from which the rooms are constructed. For example:
  •    Learning to walk
  •    Sharing your first kiss
  •    Receiving your first driving license
  •    Experiencing the birth of your child
  •    Mourning the loss of a loved one

Some houses are humble and some are great mansions. Some rooms are beautiful; some are in the construction mode; some are in ruins. Our brain is constantly creating and sometimes losing “rooms.”

Many times, late in life, rooms in your house (brain) begin to fall into disarray. In some cases these rooms can be renewed. Just like you can recarpet or repaint a room in your house, you can many times renew some of the memory rooms that you havecreated. You can pull out photos of a special time. You can take a journey and return to a wonderful place you experienced earlier. You can talk to friends and family and share experienced from your past. But unfortunately, for some, it becomes impossible to maintain the rooms (memories) of their house.
